Song for PCAE particles

From Tom Woodhouse:

I’ve made a song worksheet for an Arctic Monkeys song – Mardy Bum.

I’ve put it in the PCAE folder in unit 6. It has some of the particles from page 61, along with some great northern vocab and phrases, which is essential for everyone ;-)

Thanks, Tom!

MS Powerpoint template - CLASS QUIZ

(From Jay)

For those who attended my seminar last week (and those who didn´t) I´ve created a template using MS Powerpoint in which you can create your own questions and answers for a fun class quiz.

An incorrect answer will take you back to the beginning, so it´s good to test grammar or vocabulary, and good to repeat the things that students get wrong so they have the opportunity to correct their mistakes!

If you know how to use hyperlinks you can amend the quiz, and add even more questions if you wish.

The template, and a sample quiz, can be found here:

Business Skills and Speaking & Listening worksheets

(From Jo)

I have made some more worksheets for anybody who would like to use/adapt them.

I'd just like to clarify that you can use these worksheets with in-company and one-to-one classes unless you have a specific day-to-day study programme (e.g. Margo and Tom). In-school classes can use the worksheets as long as this doesn't interfere (or make you fall behind) with the in-school syllabus.

SPEAKING & LISTENING ACTIVITIES

We have a worksheet (with video) about the Mars One mission. You can find it here (If I die on Mars). The video and original worksheet can be found on the Granollers server:
(\Teachers\03 Levels\03 In-company Levels File\02 Resources\01 Speaking and Listening\2014-15\S&L In-company\S&L ADV UPP INT Videos\GUARDIAN If I die on Mars)

There is a worksheet based on a couple of articles about SLEEP and SLEEPWALKING with an optional additional listening activity (Four Yorkshiremen). This is here (Sleep). Audio and video files are on Granollers server:
(\Teachers\03 Levels\03 In-company Levels File\02 Resources\01 Speaking and Listening\2014-15\S&L In-company\S&L ADV UPP INT Articles)

BUSINESS SKILLS

Based on International Express Skills & Functions

Upper Intermediate - Conversational Strategies
Intermediate - Networking
Pre-Intermediate - Meetings & Greetings
Elementary - Introducing yourself and other people

The corresponding audio files can be found on the Granollers server:

FCE - materials for practising reporting verbs

Maria has created some fun materials for practising reporting verbs with teenage FCE students (Reporting verbs - teenage-friendly sentences + REPORTING VERBS - handout). Lee suggested another way of using Maria's handout: projecting it onto the board and playing sticky balls, with the teacher reading out the reporting verb and the students throwing the ball(s) into the correct section.

Shonagh has created a Find 10 activity which can also be used as strips of paper. Students decide which sentences are correct and which aren't.

All the materials can be found in the level folder (06 February Unit 8).

Many thanks to Maria, Shonagh and Lee!

Whatsapp group for students

.
Here is a very useful idea from Theresa for teen classes who all have mobile phones and Whatsapp.

Get students to set up a class Whatsapp contact list.

Whenever I write up on the board the homework, information about upcoming tests, exams, set up SWTs etc, one person takes the responsibility of taking a photo and immediately sends it to the other members of the group. This will include those were absent on the day.

Since I started this, all my TFCE students have done all of the homework, even when absent! It is also great for the group dynamics as they are all now communicating regularly with each other.

A note about using social networks with YLs
Teachers should not have young learners as 'friends' or contacts on social networks such as facebook or whatsapp.  This idea of a whatsapp group is meant to be for students only.  If you want to get in touch with students who were absent yourself to inform them about the homework or an upcoming test, you should send them an email.

PFCE - Nickelback song to practise 'used to'

Charlotte has kindly shared a worksheet for the song 'Photograph' by Nickelback.  It could be used to get students to use the structure 'used to' because it refers to states or repeated actions in the past.It is in unit 5 in the PFCE level folder.
