Free online ELT course with Coursera

Kaleigh is starting a free online course on ELT run by Coursera.  She was wondering if anyone else was interested in taking the course so you could talk about it together.
Here's some info about the course from Kaleigh:

https://www.coursera.org/course/shaping1landscape

This is the first of two ELT courses ('Shaping the way we teach English: Part 1') offered by the University of Oregon. It's FREE and you receive a digital certificate from the uni on completion of the course. I've done a couple of Coursera courses before and had a positive experience both times.

To be able to complete the course, you just need to sign up on the website (Coursera) and have access to the internet to watch videos/ complete tasks.

The course is five weeks long (from the 6th of April- 11th of May) and they suggest 3-6 hours of study a week (assuming that you watch all the videos, take part in group forums etc.), but it really depends on how much or little you want to do.

It would be great to have someone to talk about the course with & motivate me to get the most out of it! If any other teachers are interested my email is: kaleigh.boulter@cambridgeschool.com

Mistake in FCE coursebook

Aneta's spotted a mistake in Gold First:

There´s a mistake on p.166 in the grammar reference page 5.4.  Where it says ´FORM´ for the second conditional
It says:  …….would/could, etc. + past participle in the main clause    but  it should be ……would/could, etc. + infinitive in the main clause.

Thanks

It is saved in the level folder unit 7

CAE Reporting Verbs Powerpoint

Jaber has added some reporting verb slides to the CAE level folder that can be used to teach reporting verbs.

There is also a seperate table (word document) focusing on form.
The 1st page is the task that students have to do, the 2nd page is the answer key.

The table focusing on form could be a useful reference point for sts.

Both of these are saved in the CAE level folder, unit 8.

Thanks Jaber!

CAE The Human Body - First Steps

Andy has found/created a listening for CAE to use at the beginning of unit 9. It is a BBC progamme on the human body and this episode focuses on child development. It fits in nicely with the Use of English at the start of unit 9 and also provides a nice bridge from unit 8 which talks about culture shock.

Some of the ideas expressed in the video are the subject of debate (e.g. universal grammar) but that should make it all the more interesting.

The questions and answer sheet are in the level folder, unit 9.

Thanks Andy!

FCE Gold - mistake in reported question p 88

Watch out! Statement D in exercise 3 says I ask him what's it like and it should say: I ask him what it's like... Thanks, Kaleigh, for pointing it out. What an unfortunate mistake seeing as we've just covered reported speech in the previous unit!

Pictures for Starters Vocab N4

Miriam has amended a vocab powerpoint with pictures to practise vocabulary for Starters.

The final slide which was added, can be used to illustrate the word "all" that comes up in the comprehension.  It's a picture of "all" the animals in the zoo, and to contrast, "one", "two" and "some" of the animals in the (same) zoo.

The powerpoint is saved here: S:\Teachers\03 Levels\02 YL Levels File\04 N4 - Footprints 2\08 Extra material and information

Thanks Miriam!
