Christmas worksheets - In-company classes

(From Jo)

Dear all,
We have made some Christmas worksheets for you to use in your last class with in-company students. It is very important that if your class is being covered by another teacher on panto days, that you DO NOT USE these worksheets with your students. This means the following teachers should not use the Christmas worksheets so standby teachers can use them:

Teacher Group
Jay Kirkpatrick 14/AJA01
Jay Kirkpatrick 14/PARE/AN/Joan-Rama
Jo Appleyard 14/GONAL01
Jo Appleyard 14/FRDNBG01
John Tatham 14/GARNOVA05
John Tatham 14/BACHILLER02

David McAulay 14/MADFORM01
Jay Kirkpatrick 14/RAJAPACK02
Jay Kirkpatrick 14/RAJAPACK03
John Tatham 14/GARNOVA06
John Tatham 14/PARE/AN/JoseLuis-Gimenez

Here are the worksheets:

Christmas worksheet - Elementary to Pre-Intermediate

Christmas stocking game - Strong pre-int to Adv

Christmas worksheet - Int to Advanced

You can also find them on the Granollers server: S:\Teachers\03 Levels\03 In-company Levels File\02 Resources\01 Speaking and Listening\2014-15\S&L In-company\Christmas

Standby YL Christmas lesson (INF-N6)

(from Maria)

I've prepared a YL Christmas lesson for teachers who are going to be covering YL off-site classes on panto days. If you are in the panto, you are welcome to use it if your students have their last class on Monday or Tuesday (so for example on-site YL classes) but please leave it for the cover teacher to use if their last class is on panto days.

Here's the link to the lesson plan (incl. material). I've saved it here on the system: S:\Teachers\03 Levels\02 YL Levels File\Kids Flashcards & Resources\Christmas 2014

Emma has made a Christmas video worksheet based on an episode of 'How I met your mother'.  It's aimed at FCE or higher because there are no subtitiles.

Problem Solving in Business English

(from Jim)

Now that you've got to know your students and their business, here's an idea for a warmer or filler from Vicky Loras' blog. You could choose the topic of the crisis/problem to either lead into the topic of the lesson to use it as a warmer or round off the class nicely.

Penny's seminar notes: Do something different with your coursebook

You can find the handout from my seminar 'Do something different with your coursebook' from 25.11.14 here.

The series of articles from English Teaching Professional that I based the seminar on can be found here.

One of the things we talked about was using the TPET or PCAE ipacks to make pelmansim, noughts and crosses and hangman games for ANY level.  You can use those ipacks to create your own games for any class!  Read Steve's step-by-step instructions here.

We also looked at using Quizlet to make vocabulary sets which you can then play games with.  It's a website that you can sign up to for free.  You type in a set of words and definitions.  You can either play games with the online vocab cards in class or you can invite your students to the page and they can flick through the cards at home to study them and then play games with them. It lets you track their progress so you know how much they've studied.  Click on the link, sign up and have a go!

Blockbusters T4 unit 3

(From Adam)

Blockbusters instructions

The game is played in two teams.

One team has to go from left to right across the board, the other team from top to bottom.
The teams cannot cross each other on their way across

The teams can start anywhere on the left/at the top. The first team to reach the other side wins.

The letters and numbers on the board correspond to the exercises and question numbers in the revision section at the end of unit 3 (or any unit revision/review page). For example, ‘G 2/1’, refers to grammar, exercise 2, question 1.

The teams choose a question and if they get the answer correct, you fill that hexagon with their colour. If they get the answer wrong, they miss a turn and can try again on their next turn or choose a different question.

Here’s an example where the blue team has won;

You could repeat the game with one team going right to left and the other bottom to top.
The numbers were inserted using Microsoft paint and the board game templates are saved in T4 level folder, Unit 3.
Copy and paste the template into paint and use the insert text tool (boards for 36 & 25 questions)

Thanks Adam!

N3 Story Revision Activity

(From Julia C)

As revision of the Little Red Riding Hood story in Footprints 1, I’ve made a power point quiz (based on the story revision idea in the teacher’s book Unit 2 lesson 3).

This can be found in the level folder, unit 2

Thanks Julia!

S+L Six surprisingly well-paid jobs (advanced)

(From Miriam)

Speaking and Listening Advanced

I have adapted this One Stop English lesson (see link below) and made it more speaking-orientated. I haven’t included  any of the language exercises except the first one (key words).  The powerpoint presentation (no animations, I’m afraid!) consists of a lead-in speaking activity about well-paid jobs in general, and their job in particular, followed by the key words exercise. To make the reading activity shorter and more communicative, I copied and cut up the job descriptions, and gave one to each std in the group and they described the jobs to each other and then talked about which they would and wouldn’t do. (Instructions on ppt.) At the end of the lesson, I gave them the copy of the sheet with all the job descriptions to take home to read.

It worked quite well, but my students are very talkative so we didn’t manage to do the vocab activity at all. (And I have a two-hour class!)

The powerpoint presentation is in the Speaking and Listening level folder, 2014-15, S&L Incompany.

Thanks Miriam!

Videos website

Carla has suggested an interesting website where you can find videos to use in class, for example as lead-ins.  They come with questions prepared.  Obviously, you have to be selective with the videos and adapt the questions if they don't seem useful.

The website is ESLvideo.com and here are two examples:

Thanks for passing this on, Carla!

Seminar in Barcelona: Changes to FCE from 2015

INF Monster Maker Unit 3

(From Carla)

Here's a fun intro to unit 3 worksheet 1 JUNGLE FUN:

What I did was pre-teach body vocab + play a few flashcard games. Then put this page up on the projector, choose a body and get kids to choose what part of body + colour they want to choose and let them drag the body part to the monster.

They really enjoyed it.

There is a link in the INF level folder, unit 3. Or click on the monster to go directly to the site.

Thanks Carla!

PCAE unit 3 Task (Decide which project to back)

Tom Woodhouse has prepared a worksheet based on the TV series Dragons' Den.

Students watch the first two business ideas being presented, instead of reading the business ideas on page 32.
They then do the speaking task on page 33, based on the two pitches they've seen.

The worksheet is in unit 3 in the PCAE level folder.

Thanks, Tom!

N4 Unit 2 Word Magnets Animal Vocab

(From Lee)

I have created a Triptico word magnets game with the animal vocabulary from unit 2.

Each word is a different colour and students have to arrange the letters to make the words.

You may find it easier if the students match the letters on the computer with the mouse, as opposed to with the projector pen.

You can find this activity in the N4 level folder, Unit 2

Welcome to the Teaching Ideas blog!

The idea behind this new blog is to create a space where teachers can share worksheets, Powerpoint presentations, games etc. with each other.  Several teachers have very generously shared their Halloween lesson ideas this week and I’m sure they’ve been greatly appreciated by whoever’s been able to use them.  Sometimes teachers put a lot of time into creating a Triptico game, an engaging lead-in on Powerpoint, or an attractive grammar presentation.  I think it would be great to show teachers in all the centres what you’ve created so everyone can benefit from it and you can get some credit for the effort you’ve put in.

Similarly, many level leaders spend hours producing much more material than they are expected to and without that we wouldn’t have all the extra resources available to us in the level folders.
Level leaders are also welcome to use the teaching ideas blog to let teachers know of any new material that they’ve made between level meetings.

So, how will the teaching ideas blog work?
It would be too complicated to make all teachers contributors, so only managers will be able to make posts, just like with the CS News for Teachers blog.  If you have some material to share, please send it to Lee to post on the Teaching Ideas blog. She’ll need to know what level it is for and which unit it relates to.  Depending on the material, you may also need to include brief instructions and an answer key.

We’ll also be posting teaching ideas that we get from journals or webinars.
You will receive a daily email with the previous day’s posts, just like you do for the CS News for Teachers blog.

We look forward to getting your contributions!
