Halloween with YLs
(from Maria)
Dear INF-N6 teachers
Halloween's just round the corner!
With INF students, we normally dedicate one or two full lessons to Halloween and students make a craft (See Extra material and information in the INF level folder).
With N levels, if you're on track with the syllabus and can spare a lesson, you're welcome to make a craft with them as well. (There are plenty of resources in Extra material and information in the N2 Level folder, for example.) But usually we teach them some vocabulary and do a few halloween songs and related activities.
We bought the Super Simple Songs Halloween CD last year and we've just downloaded flashcards, worksheets and other photocopiable material from the Super Simple Songs webpage. It's all saved here:
P:\05 Songsheets\03 VYL Songs\Super Simple Songs\Super Simple Songs CDs\06 Super Simple Songs Halloween\SSS Halloween resources
OR
S:\Teachers\03 Levels\02 YL Levels File\SSS Halloween resources
You'll see I've assigned each folder a level - that's so we're not all doing the same thing and also some songs are more childish than others. You can use any of the songs if you like, but please use the photocopiable worksheets from the folder corresponding to your level. All these songs have videos on YouTube!
Besides, there might be more resources in Extra material and information in the corresponding level folders.
Dear T teachers
Even though we can't dedicate whole lessons to Halloween in T levels, students will enjoy doing a vocabulary-based activity, speaking activity, scary story (eg urband legend) or song.
Here are a few links to pages where you might find inspiration. Keep your eyes peeled, because I'm sure other teachers will share their ideas on the teaching blog over the next few days.

Updating Academies
(from Jim)
Hi everyone
From time to time we release an update for Academies to install new features and make little fixes. If there is an update available it should automatically download and install it when you open the program.
However, occasionally the auto-update doesn't work and gives an error message, e.g. "Error en el procés d'actualtzació". In this case you can double-click the icon on the desktop called "Manually update Academies" which should fix the problem.
Please let Jay know if the icon on the desktop has been removed so that he can add it back.

PCAE final exam practise
From Penny
PCAE teachers,
I've put some extra reading and listening tasks in the PCAE level folder, in the final exam folder. They are the same task types as the reading and listening on the final exam. It would be a good idea to practise these in class before the exam because they are CAE-type tasks, which don't appear in the coursebook we're using.

Jamie Oliver food revolution videos
Here are some great ideas from Julia Cross on how to use two You Tube clips about Jamie Oliver's food revolution and food education programme.
Click here to read the article (in Spanish). or follow the links below to the videos.
Video 1: Potato or tomato?
N4 teachers, If you’re doing the fruit
unit in Footprints 2, you might like to show this Jamie Oliver food revolution
day video.
He goes into a classroom in a school in
Huttingdon, West Virginia, (the town with the largest number of ‘obese’ people
in America)and asks the kids the name of certain fruits and veg. They don’t
know what a tomato is!!
Possible task:
1. Explain
the experiment and who Jamie Oliver is. He thinks Food education should be a
subject like Maths. Kids should learn how to grow and cook fresh nutritious
food.
2.
Watch
the video – I’d jot down the fruit and veg they say and or see and the kids
have to ü the ones they hear. If there are too
many new words, just write a max of 10 and include some of the fruit vocab from
Footprints as extras. These will have a × because they won’t see or hear them
in the video J
Video 2: Food revolution
Content: Food Revolution day – this short video explains a few facts about what unhealthy eating is doing to
children and talks about the petition to present to Govts.
Perhaps for older kids T2, T3 , T4 –
good if you’ve doing a unit on food or good for a speaking listening activity +
revision of food vocab from a previous unit.
You could invent some questions and give
3 possible answers. Students guess the answer first and then listen to see if
they are correct or not.

The app can be operated by a teacher from their computer. Anastasia is using it with her N3 class.

Mental health social inclusion project
From Alistair
An ex-Cambridge School teacher, Fiona Oates, has set up a project to help people recovering from serious mental health issues access English classes. Here are her comments about the project:
It would be great if you could show the promo video and send the leaflet to your teachers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvIKeT1jfm8
This first push to generate awareness is so important for our initiative and of course for a group of people already at great risk of social exclusion and who experience a great deal of stigma on a daily basis.
The closing date for the Mental Health Friendly lesson plan competition is 6th June and the task is to design a 45 minute lesson for a general adults English class, that talks about mental health.

CAE Gold Reading multiple choice part 5 p112
CAE teachers,
Robin has spotted a problem with one of the reading tasks in Gold Advanced. Here are his notes:
Just had a go at doing the task in the coursebook, and found it very difficult. This is because the answer to question 2 can be found at the end of paragraph 4, whereas the answer to question 3 is at the end of paragraph 3 and question 4 and the beginning of paragraph 3. I've never come across this before.
My understanding of the task instructions (see p199) is that the questions should follow the order of the text. I think this reading activity might be another mistake on the part of the coursebook publishers.
I'd advise teachers to be wary of just giving this text to the students as it might knock their confidence a bit.
If you do this reading in class, please warn your students that the questions should be in the following order (the order that the answers appear in the text):
Q1

Cambridge exams - informative videos
Here are some links to videos created by Cambrige English to help students do better in official exams. The first three seem to be aimed at students taking PET-CAE exams and the last one is aimed at CAE students.
Writing
Speaking
Speaking 2 - criteria
CAE Speaking
You could watch the clips with your students. They could brainstorm ideas, write them down and then watch the video and tick the ones they have on their lists. Or they could watch the videos and then prepare a poster with tips.

Free online ELT course with Coursera
Kaleigh is starting a free online course on ELT run by Coursera. She was wondering if anyone else was interested in taking the course so you could talk about it together.
Here's some info about the course from Kaleigh:
https://www.coursera.org/course/shaping1landscape
This is the first of two ELT courses ('Shaping the way we teach English: Part 1') offered by the University of Oregon. It's FREE and you receive a digital certificate from the uni on completion of the course. I've done a couple of Coursera courses before and had a positive experience both times.
To be able to complete the course, you just need to sign up on the website (Coursera) and have access to the internet to watch videos/ complete tasks.
The course is five weeks long (from the 6th of April- 11th of May) and they suggest 3-6 hours of study a week (assuming that you watch all the videos, take part in group forums etc.), but it really depends on how much or little you want to do.
It would be great to have someone to talk about the course with & motivate me to get the most out of it! If any other teachers are interested my email is: kaleigh.boulter@cambridgeschool.com

It
says: …….would/could, etc. + past participle in the main clause
but it should be ……would/could, etc. + infinitive
in the main clause.

CAE The Human Body - First Steps
Andy has found/created a listening for CAE to use at the
beginning of unit 9. It is a BBC progamme on the human body and
this episode focuses on child development. It fits in nicely with
the Use of English at the start of unit 9 and also provides a
nice bridge from unit 8 which talks about culture shock.
Some of the ideas expressed in the video are the subject
of debate (e.g. universal grammar) but that should make it all the more
interesting.
The questions and answer sheet are in the level folder, unit 9.
Thanks Andy!
